Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity of wisdom, prosperity, and the remover of obstacles. The festival typically lasts for 10 days, starting on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (August-September). During Ganesh Chaturthi, beautifully crafted idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and public pandals (temporary stages). The celebrations include chanting of Vedic hymns, prayers, and offerings of sweets like modak, which is believed to be Ganesha’s favorite. The festival culminates with the immersion of the idols in water, symbolizing Ganesha’s return to his celestial abode. Ganesh Chaturthi is especially popular in the Indian states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, and is also celebrated by Hindu communities worldwide.
